AOL is Late ... By YearsAOL is clearly years late to embrace this business model: "Hoping for a bigger piece of the fast-growing
online advertising pie, AOL later this month will unveil a revamped
AOL.com Web site, offering free access to many of the features once
available only to AOL's paying subscribers -- such as news, Internet
radio, videos of music concerts and articles from magazines published
by AOL's sister publications at Time Inc." The only question is whether they are too late.

Netscape 8 ... Why Bother?Netscape has about 1% of the total browser market, and its new browser is running into one problem after another. Why bother? I can't think of a reason. Just download Firefox.

VOIP and 911Vonage connected my 911 line very quickly, but I had to request it. Susan Crawford wonders when the first lawsuit will be filed, and she see the heavy hand of politics: "It has to be that the FCC has become convinced (tell me this isn't the case) that independent VoIP services have to be squelched. Run out of town. Diminished so that they can't cause trouble for the big guys." Hmm.

GeoBloggersFlickr + Google Maps. Another cool application. You need latitude and longitude to do the search, but they are in the process of upgrading to add a zip code search. Here is a search from Middleton.

GrokkerThis is a new graphical search engine based on the results of Yahoo! search. Check it out for yourself, but also look at this review. Although I agree that Grokker requires too many clicks and does not provide enough intuition in the blobs, I don't always agree with this: "A simple list of text links really isn’t a broken format, and you can’t help wondering what the graphical designers are trying to fix." The list of text links is great if your result appears in the top 3 or 5 or 10, but it is clumsy for searches that return huges results. This seems to be the main advantage of a graphical interface (see Grokker's blog for an illustration of a "Peeps" search), but I don't find Grokker all that helpful in solving the problem.

Firefox Live BookmarksIf you don't already use the Firefox browser, you should. Jeff Nolan just pointed out another reason why: live bookmarks. This is "a new technology in Firefox that lets you view RSS news and blog headlines in the bookmarks toolbar or bookmarks menu."

Law, Markets & SpamLaw has proven an ineffective constraint on spam email, but users are demanding solutions. Blocking programs are a "recipient pays" method, but the NYT describes an effort to shift the costs of spam to the senders. The Penny Black Project offers some hope. UPDATE: Or not, says Eric Goldman.
